High school, PTI launch mobile learning program
Saipan Southern High School and Pacific Telecom Inc. launched yesterday a new mobile learning program that uses text messaging.
At least 54 SSHS students have enrolled in the M-Learning Program, which will allow students to continue their education even as they enjoy their summer vacation.
Through a partnership with PTI, some students received free phones and free text messaging when they enrolled in the program. Others simply registered their personal cellular phones.
The curriculum involves teachers “texting” students with detailed academic questions and the students responding by sending text messages to the teacher or by posting messages on the school’s M-Learning web portal.
“Although the CNMI is relatively small in terms of the end users of mobile phones, the per capita usage continues to increase and, along with that, the educational system will continue to incorporate the use of these mobile technologies into the classroom,” SSHS said in a news release.
SSHS vice principal Craig Garrison said the program would run during the summer break. But the school will consider carrying the program through the whole academic year if a significant number of students participate.
Saipan Southern High School has 743 students. Over half of them have cellular phones, Garrison said.
