Man charged with attempted murder
The Superior Court yesterday found probable cause to warrant the filing of charges against a man who allegedly approached a group of workers playing cards, stabbed one with a knife and chased the others.
During a preliminary hearing, associate judge David A. Wiseman said that after listening to the testimony of the government’s witness and the arguments by the counsel, he determined there is probable cause that crimes were committed and that Silvestre Ascura Hannibal may have committed the offenses.
Wiseman ordered the 44-year-old Hannibal to answer the charges of attempted second-degree murder, two counts of assault with a dangerous weapon, and one count of disturbing the peace.
Assistant attorney general Rebecca Warfield appeared for the government at the hearing. Assistant public defender Samuel Randal represented the defendant.
Arraignment was set for May 22.
The Attorney General’s Office alleged that on May 8, 2006 Hannibal attempted to murder Rodolfo Sasota Ramirez by chasing him and swinging a butcher knife at him.
The AGO said the defendant also swung the butcher knife at Catalino Alba, almost cutting him.
The prosecution said Hannibal disturbed the peace of the two victims and four other persons.
Police said Ramirez suffered a cut to the neck and shoulder.
Associate Judge Kenneth Govendo imposed a $50,000 cash bail for the defendant’s temporary liberty.
Police said Ramirez and other friends were playing cards at 2am outside the Nikko Hotel’s barracks in San Roque when Hannibal attacked them, cutting Ramirez on the right side of the neck and upper right shoulder.
Hannibal, still holding the knife, chased the group. Responding police spotted Hannibal hiding in the bush located at the back of the building. The officers subdued the suspect and disarmed him.
The prosecution said Hannibal was drinking alcoholic beverages prior to the attack.
