The Saipan Chamber of Commerce has launched its “Invite-A-Sailor” program, which aims to provide an opportunity for local families to meet and entertain a member of the U.S. military forces.

The program, sponsored by the Armed Forces Committee chaired by Judge David A Wiseman, would also provide an occasion for these sailors, who are far from home, for a home visit and a chance to connect with local families.

Chamber executive director Christine Parke said that interested families can invite a sailor to their home for a meal or barbecue.

“There is no other obligation or expectations, although families may wish to take their sailor on an island tour or other activity,” she said in a statement.

Several local families have already expressed their interest and signed up for the program, Parke said, but more host families are always welcome.

A chance to get this program up and running comes today, with the arrival of USS Lassen, a U.S. Navy guided missile destroyer that will visit Saipan for rest and recreation.

The USS Lassen, an Oscar Austin class guided missile destroyer, will arrive this morning and will leave Saipan on May 13. It has a crew of about 380 personnel. Representatives from the Chamber’s Armed Forces Committee will be on hand to greet and brief officers this morning.
