A surprisingly large number of people turned out for the first night of the 8th Annual Taste of the Marianas International Food and Beer Festival last Saturday at the American Memorial Park.

The event drew at least 1,000 people who gamely tried and feasted on a veritable smorgasbord of dishes prepared by some of Saipan’s best restaurants and hotels.

Taste of the Marianas will be held every Saturday night of May from 6pm to 10pm. The event features local and international cuisine sold by participating local hotels and restaurant outlets. Over 18 hotels, restaurants and other food handlers participated in this year’s gastronomical fair.

MVA held a brief ceremony to start the food fest in line with Tourism Month. Aside from the food, MVA said visitors to the festival can also enjoy the sights and sounds of local and international performers jam the night away.

For instance, the Inatuas Dance Troupe entertained the crowd with their traditional Chamorro folk dances, while Koby the Clown did some rounds of magic tricks for the crowd.

The event also coincides with the 30th anniversary of the local tourism industry.

Participating hotels include Aqua Resort Club, Hafa Adai Hotel, Fiesta Resort & Spa, Saipan Grand Hotel, World Resort Hotel, Marianas Resort, and Hyatt Regency Saipan.

The festival was launched in 1999 with the enduring collaboration between MVA and the Hotel Association of the Northern Mariana Islands.
