The last game of the night turned out to be the most exciting as the Dirk Digglers recovered from an emotionally draining loss in the opening set by winning the next two to become the first team to reach the two-win mark of the 7th Annual Spring Co-ed Four-Person Beach Volleyball League at the Pacific Islands Club.

After dropping the first set of their match to Just Put It In, 13-11, Kirk Palacios’ squad pulled out all the stops to turn the tables for a win in yet another marathon match that ended up with a 13-11 outcome on Thursday night at the popular San Antonio beach ball hot spot.

After finally gaining the advantage late in the game, the Digglers got a sideout-saving effort from Kaycee Rengaelur, which Just Put It In captain Ike Diopolus failed to return, that ended up being the deciding point.

With the set count locked at one apiece the Digglers took total control, as Rengaelur scored a slew of points off of his lethal jump serve that propelled his team to a lopsided 11-1 win in the finale.

At 2-0, the Digglers are atop the league standings ahead of five 1-0 squads, while Just Put It In slid to seventh place early in the season.

Victoria’s Secret 2, Last Call 1

In their first game of the season, Victoria’s Secret scored its maiden win over Last Call on Thursday night by trouncing the Clubmate-laden squad in the first two sets before letting the third one slide.

Stephanie Arnold’s Secret setters wasted little time getting the win as team namesake Victoria Riordan, Nick Castro, Nick Gross, and Jason Ruluked provided a the point producing punch for a combined 22-7 score through the first two sets.

They were unable to hold on for the sweep in the third set as Amanda Puleo’s fearless Last Call crew rallied to win its second set of the season by an 11-5 margin, thanks in large part to the talented Dennis Tababa, Evan Hunsberger, Johann Noetzel, and John Waecther.

Victoria’s Secret strives for another win next Tuesday, May 9, against the Ying Yang Clan at 7:30pm, while Last Call continues to find the first win of the season against the winless MHS Dolphin Divers on Thursday, May 11, at 6:30pm

Sand In My Pants 3, MHS Dolphin Leapers 0

The MHS Dolphin Leapers fell for the second time in a row when they faced Sandra Arnold’s steely Sand In My Pants squad on Thursday night that swept them from the San Antonio sand in straight sets.

The Leapers gave their best effort to get the night started as they nearly beat the pants off of the SIMPS, but they fell shy of their goal by losing 11-7. It was all downhill from there as the Emily Jang gang lost the following sets by a combined 22-9 score.

Despite the loss, the Leapers have a wealth of talent and have a legitimate shot at making the postseason if they can show up in force and focus on the remaining games at hand.

At 0-2, they will have to do something soon before falling to far behind the pack, but they have a shot at fellow winless wonders Last Call in their next trip to the PIC. Sand In My Pants (1-0) has a chance to take the next step toward first place when they challenge the Ying Yang Clan next Thursday, May 11, at 8:30pm.

Ying Yang Clan 3, MHS Dolphin Splashers 0

Max Kuan and the Ying Yang Clan had a plan when they took the sand as they piled on the points and provided nearly flawless defense to sweep the MHS Dolphin Splashers to notch their first win of the season.

Kuan, the fire-dancing football player and veteran beach ball player, guided his teammates to a rousing 33-11 win over the Splashers in which they scored back-to-back 11-3 set wins to clinch the game before allowing a couple extra points to slip by in the third, 11-5.

The win gave the Clan a strong start to the season, while the Splashers fell for the second time in as many games. They will have a strong chance at earning a “W” next Thursday, May 11, when they lock horns with the Splashers in an all-MHS spectacular at 5:30pm.
