Teachers in the CNMI and all over the nation will be in the spotlight on May 9 when students, parents, school administrators, and the public celebrate National Teacher’s Day to recognize teachers who are making great public schools for every child.

This year’s national theme—“Great Teachers Make Great Public Schools”—draws attention to the important role teachers have in making sure every child receives a quality public education.

May 7 to 13 is also Teacher Appreciation Week, so students and parents are urged to take time out to show the CNMI’s hard working and dedicated teachers how much they mean to the community.

For creative ideas, one can log on to www.educationworld.com or parents can ask their child to make something meaningful for his/her teacher.

The Garapan Elementary School was the first to come out with a statement thanking public school teachers. In a statement, it said: “On behalf of the staff and administration at GES, we thank all the teachers and aides who have made it their mission to nurture lives and impart knowledge to the children we serve. Si’ yu’us ma’ase and Happy Teacher’s Appreciation Week!”

GES said that few other professionals touch as many lives as teachers do, so Teachers’ Appreciation Week would be an opportunity for everyone in the community to reach out to teachers.

“Let’s advocate for high standards, fair and meaningful evaluation of work, and resources that go directly to the classroom. An ample reward for all educators is the community’s active support of the work we mutually do to teach and care for the community’s students,” it said.

“Public schools are at the heart of any community. When there are problems, we address them. When there are kudos, we share them. We believe that we all have to work together to continue making our schools even better. That means everyone in our community: parents, business owners, retirees, other professionals, our local government and yes, students,” the school’s statement adds. (PR)
