Bill seeks to rename NMC after ex-Gov. Camacho

Rep. Justo S. Quitugua has introduced a bill that seeks to rename the Northern Marianas College after the CNMI's first governor, Carlos S. Camacho, who helped established the institution.

Quitugua wants to rename NMC to “Gov. Carlos S. Camacho, Northern Marianas College” to honor the former chief executive.

Quitugua was not present during yesterday's House's session. He, however, instructed Rep. David Apatang to introduce his bill.

When Saipan Tribune left the session, there were no further discussions on the proposed measure.

Camacho, a former resident commissioner, issued the proclamation in 1976 that provided for the establishment of NMC.

However, among the impediments to the establishment of the college at the time was the lack of a suitable facility.

To address the issue, then Gov. Camacho established a task force. In May 1980, the task force completed its review and study of the feasibility of a community college and set forth its findings and recommendations.

The study determined that a college was indeed feasible.

The bill states that in March 1981, then Gov. Camacho issued an executive order that effectively established the Northern Marianas Community College, now known as the Northern Marianas College.

“Thanks in part to the vision and leadership of the Commonwealth's first elected governor who issued the enabling order, NMC continues to provide the students of the Commonwealth an opportunity to further their academic and technical education beyond high school. Accordingly, the purpose of the Act is to rename the college in honor of the man that helped establish the institution,” the legislation states.
